Well, I just got done moving into the new place this past Friday, and let me tell you, it was a bitch. Moving always is, but this one seemed to wear on me more than most. I made a joke to my brother that I wish I had about 20 percocets to go with the 3/4 full bottle of scotch that I had so I could just end the misery and sleep for eternity. First of all, the promised free wi-fi was non-existent, which just drove me nuts. Well. Time to figure out something to do, so I went to the local Radio Shack, and picked up a Virgin Mobile doodad to connect to the internet via one of my USB ports, as well as a pre-paid $50 data plan, unlimited usage. Good deal right? The doodad was $80 bucks alone, so with tax, I was out $150 for internet service, which was fine with me, $50 a month unlimited after that. I forgot I live in Vermont, and apparently, 3G internet service just isn’t possible over the Sprint network, only 1/2 mile up the road from where I bought it from.

Grrrr. I spent almost an hour and a half with Virgin Mobile’s crack support technician to figure out that indeed, no service was available where I live. I finally got it worked out to have the cost of the pre-paid card refunded to me, as well as the 80 bucks for the doodad, which I accomplished on Saturday. I cast no aspersions upon Indians’ (from India) ability to solve problems, but it might help if Virgin Mobile hired technicians who actually spoke English in a way that is understandable. Just saying.

Soooo, I moseyed over to the Verizon store to enquire about the same kind of set up. I am very happy to report that I was actually able to deal with folks who spoke English, and I am posting this over the sweet device and plan they hooked me up with. I first asked about pre-paid, and yes, they had that option, but it was going to cost me dearly, what with paying for the doodad, and the plan for data. They asked why I didn’t want to just do a contract, where the doodad is free, and the data charges are much less. I was honest, and told them my credit rating sucks, so that is probably not going to be an option. They asked if they could run my information just for shits and giggles, and I agreed. Surprise, surprise! I walked out of there with the doodad and a 10GB per month plan for $75, and I can connect to the internet with this computer from literally anywhere, no wi-fi needed. That brightened my day considerably. Their 3G network is fast too, easily as fast as my former Comcast cable connection; I can video chat, as well as stream videos without any issues. If you are looking for wireless connectivity that provides fast and reliable coverage literally anywhere you might be, (even Vermont) go with Verizon. They took the time to ask me about my usage, and set me up with the best plan they could do. I am totally happy. I have a 10GB per month allowance, and even with video chatting for 6 hours or so, I haven’t even broken 1 GB of usage.

Anyhow, just to let everyone know I am still here, and doing well, settling into the new digs. You all be good, and I will write more soon.

There are dangerous jobs, then there are really dangerous jobs. I would imagine being a soldier is dangerous, as are some of the more obvious jobs such as a firefighter, or policeman, etc. Hell, even my job can be dangerous. Some of the chemicals I work with building circuit boards include 50% sodium hydroxide, 98% sulfuric acid, nitric acid, formaldehyde, 45% hydrochloric acid, as well as strong oxidizers, such as 35% hydrogen peroxide. We also use potassium gold cyanide in our gold plating baths, which is a deadly toxin, especially if it is mixed with, say, sulfuric acid; it would create cyanide gas, and that is just bad news. You DO NOT want to get any of these chemicals on your skin, or especially in your eyes. For example, if you got 98% sulfuric acid or 50% sodium hydroxide in your eyes, you would be blind for the rest of your life, period, end of story, I dont care if you are 1 second away from the eye wash station. If you should spill 35% hydrogen peroxide on your leather sneakers, they would first get very hot, then literally burst into flame. I have been splashed with sulfuric acid, and I am here to tell you, it hurts like a son-of-a-bitch, and it leaves scars, even after 3 seconds or so.

I once had an employee by mistake mix 2 incompatible chemicals together while he was filling a five gallon tote from a 55 gallon drum. He thought he was pumping into a sodium hydroxide tote, which he was, problem was, the barrel he was pumping from with a hand pump contained formaldehyde. One pump of the handle was all it took. The ceilings in the area are about 30 feet high, and the resulting eruption coated the ceiling, and he was off to the emergency room, and out of work for 4 weeks, even though he was wearing the proper PPE, or personal protection equipment. I wasn’t in the area when it happen, but a couple of his co-workers quick actions literally saved his life. Needless to say, I wrote a new two man verification procedure as a corrective action in response to this accident.

All of that aside, this job is just madness…

I cannot believe OSHA allows these guys to climb without using safety harnesses. I bet they probably make pretty good money for their efforts as well. Have fun, be safe at what you do, and be good to one another.

It is finally snowing here in Vermont, and they say we are to get a substantial amount of it, upwards of a foot by morning, although it doesn’t look like that will happen. It has been a most unusual winter here, our last significant snowfall was on October 29th, when we got a foot plus. Not only that, but temperatures this winter were averaging 40′s for highs, which is really unusual for Vermont in the winter. Last year at this time, we were up to our ears in snow, literally. Snow banks were 8 feet in some places, and it was freaking cold! If this winter represents global warming, bring it on. If the oceans rise because of it, I am pretty high up here, so screw it. It beats freezing and shoveling snow.

The shutter on my friend Chuck’s camera went tits up last week during a shoot, and he has a really big shoot this weekend with a west coast model. He unfortunately just sent all of his Nikon gear to Adorama for appraisal and trade toward lenses or another Canon body, he is going with all Canon now, but that left him with only a 4MP Olympus. Well, obviously these turn of events have left him in quite a pickle, so since he has been so helpful to me, letting me borrow lenses and flashes, I am letting him borrow my Canon EOS Rebel T3i for his shoot. I am bringing it to him tomorrow, so he will have a day at least to get familiar with the camera, and do some test shots. It should work out well for him, the T3i has 18MP resolution, it can control up to 12 speedlight flashes wirelessly, and with the Canon lenses he has, he should get very good results. I am not usually given to let even good friends borrow such things as $900 camera bodies, but one, Chuck is a professional, and two, he has been so helpful to me in developing my own camera skills, I had to make the offer to him.  Oh, and Chuck, if you are reading this, it certainly wouldn’t break my heart should you forget to erase the 8gb card I am going to leave in the camera;-)

Anyhow, I have lots of things going on right now, which is why posting has and will remain light for another 2 weeks or so. I will probably put something up this weekend, and then look for about a week of not so much, perhaps a mid-week music post or something. I am having Chinese tonight for dinner, YUMMY!! I got a pu pu platter, chicken chow mein, pork fried rice and hot and sour soup. All told, about $25, but that will feed me dinner for 3 nights, easily. I have discovered I can actually save money by eating out. Problem with that is getting healthy food to eat, but ordering such things as salads and such balances it out. Also, I very much avoid fast food, such as McDonalds, Wendy’s etc. Frozen foods, soups and sandwiches and prepared foods from the local Hannaford work well too, and I can always put together a fairly well balanced meal from such stuff. It’s easy, cheap, I don’t have to fuss with cooking during the week, and especially I don’t have to do dishes. Funny thing is, I love to cook, and I am very good at it, but work weeks just exhaust me anymore, so I save the good stuff for the weekends. It also helps that I have the metabolism of a nuclear reactor in meltdown stage; I can eat anything, as much as I want, and I do without gaining an ounce of weight over about 160# or so. Healthy too, blood sugars are good, blood pressure is great, cholesterol numbers are right on as well, despite the fact that I am an insulin dependent type 1 diabetic. I count my blessings every day.

Well, I am off to make up some of that wonderful Chinese food, and watch some TV before beddy-bye time. Talk to you all later, and be good to one another.

Well now Rick Santourum is the darling of the Republican party, good for him. He is also, as so many other candidates have done, sticking his big foot fully in his mouth, and the media are crucifying him for it as we speak. This post is going to be short and sweet. I like Santourum, he is a much better candidate than Gingrich, and certainly better than Romney, whom I know a little bit about, since he was governor in the state that borders mine. Santourum has some solid conservative creds, and personally, there won’t be any dirty things coming out of the woodwork for him such as affairs or other such improprieties.

That all being said, allow me to offer a bit of advice here. Social issues just aren’t going to play in this election. As a candidate, for the love of God, why would you even say something that can be twisted into your being a right wing religious nut by the media? You know they will, so why do it? I understand in a primary, the goal is to attract the votes of republicans, including the religious right of the party, but new flash for you bub, they will vote for you anyway, as long as your name isn’t Romney. They will certainly vote for you if you name isn’t Obama. It amazes me how stupid these guys can be.

People are hurting. February un-employment is expected to top out at 9%, gas prices are skyrocketing again, which makes everything from toilet paper to food cost more. We as a nation are closing in on our debt being more than our GDP, with no end in sight. Our enemies are expanding their military capabilities; Iran is a huge looming threat, and yet we are slashing our military spending. There are so many solid issues to address that effect millions of Americans directly that it isn’t even funny. Most Americans don’t want to hear about how you will save their un-born babies, or keep gays from being married. Seriously? Really? Most folks are having a hard time just feeding the babies they already have, and really don’t give a shit about your moral prattling. If I want a moral dressing down, I can always see my minister for that; I expect my President to take care of business, and stay the hell out of my life and my bedroom. Shut up already. I am a conservative, but I support gay marriage, as far as government is concerned in that marriage recognized by government is nothing more than a social contract, but that is a discussion for another time.

As I pointed out above, there are so many pertinent issues to talk about and beat Obama with. Just stop with the bullshit already, because people in the street could frankly care less about how religious you are; that is a turn off, and while it may garner you some votes in the primary, the stupid shit you say will be used against you in the general, and you can count on that.

As I have said before, I would vote for Donald Duck rather than Obama in the general election, and trust me, any conservative worth their name would do the same. If Obama gets a second term, we are literally sunk as a nation; the American dream is over, never to come back. This election is literally for all the marbles. Be good to one another.

Hope you all are enjoying a well deserved day off, enjoy it, because by my calendar, the next holiday will occur sometime around the end of May. I finally got done with a full edit of the 500+ pictures I shot at the Harris Hill ski jump on Saturday, winding up with about 270 or so images that were acceptable to me after first edit, which just involves tossing badly composed or blurry pictures. I haven’t even began to crop or fool with them in Photoshop yet, and truth be told, I rather would not like to do that. To my mind, I would rather have the raw take from the camera, un-fooled with. Photoshop is an amazingly powerful tool, but the results represent something other than the skill of the photographer in the end.

That was an extremely challenging shoot, for a number of reasons. I have attended many professional sporting events over the years, such as Major League Baseball, NFL football, and NHL hockey games. Football is a great example to use here. When you watch an NFL game on TV, it is great and exciting, but TV doesn’t even come close to doing justice to just how big and fast those guys are. In person, you are watching men who are 6’4″ tall and weigh 280# who can run a 40 yard sprint in under 5 seconds! Ski jumping is really not much different from that; they exit the jump moving along at about 60mph, which makes capturing images of them the devil’s own work. Baseball? Easy, just hook up a fast telephoto lens, say an f2.8, and bump up the shutter speed to catch the action. The batter is standing right there, and here comes the ball. The problems with shooting ski jumpers are many, the most difficult being the fact that as I mentioned, they are moving at 60mph. You have tree branches and people who play hell with your auto focus, and bright snow and sun which screw with your auto light metering. At that speed, manual focus is just not an option, especially at 400mm zoom. Thankfully, my Canon camera can rip off 4.7 frames per second in sports mode, and I can limit the high end of the ISO speed, which I did to cut down on noise and distortion. So to get a picture like this, you have to be at maximum zoom, and the camera pointed at a spot where you think the jumper will appear in your frame. In sports mode, the camera will use servo focus, which means it is constantly focusing, no matter the movement of the subject or the camera. When the jumper got into the frame, I just fired off 10 shots, and this is the best of those 10…

Thankfully, it was a nice warm day, about 45 degrees or so. The beer tent was just mobbed, it took me 20 minutes to get a true 16oz locally brewed McNiell’s porter, and a delicious bread bowl full of chili and cheese while the folks worked on the jump between action. 6 bucks for the beer, and 5 bucks for the chili….Really? I can understand that everyone wants to make money, but give it a break already. Kudos to Saxtons River Distillery on the other hand. The owner and distiller was giving out free tastes of his very yummy Vermont maple syrup liquor, with a well shot costing only 3 bucks. I took advantage of one of those, although I didn’t buy a bottle, it being about 30 bucks for a 750ml taste. I can kick in another 10 bucks, and get a really great 15yr old scotch, thankee very much.

I am going to be moving on the 9th of March, which is what I was talking about in my big things post earlier. I have to replace the master cylinder on my car this week, and then move on along from here. Rooms want’s to have his girl and her daughter move in, and while I could fight it, I am not going to bother with it. Things happen for a reason, and this whole thing is going to move me along toward where I want to be, which is in Rome, NY with my dad and my brother. Pops turned 72 this year, and I really want to be with him in his twilight years if I can. In case anyone is wondering, things aren’t contentious between rooms and I, it is what it is. Another step down the path of life. I appreciate everything I have had, and I look forward to things to come. I used to look at life like a series of kicks in the balls, and to be truthful, it can seem like that sometimes, but you just have to keep your head up, and look for the opportunities presented to you.

Alright, enough of the psych class, needless to say, I have a lot of shit going on over the next few weeks that I need to accomplish. Posting may be light, but I will do my best to keep you all up to date. It will all work out eventually. Be good to one another.

We here in Brattleboro are blessed with having a 90 meter ski jump, named Harris Hill. It has been there since 1922, long before ski jumping was even an Olympic sport. Over the years, Harris Hill has been the site of 18 national and regional ski jumping championships. The original extreme sport indeed, and if you ever get a chance to see it in person, you will know why that statement is true. Here then is a story in pictures of my first time witnessing a ski jumping event.

Here is a long shot of the jump and hill, long before the competition began. Click the pics to make them bigger…

I climbed that big assed hill to get this shot of the bottom of the jump itself. Believe it or not, I was allowed to stand right below the jump while the competition was happening.

That shot was looking up, this one is looking down, just to give you an idea of just how steep this thing is. That would be one hell of a sled ride, let alone on a pair of skis.

Anyhow, the jumpers get a ride on a pickup truck bed about halfway up the hill from the staging area, then they are on their own to climb the rest of the way up to the jump.

Once they get up there, they sit on a bar with their skis in the track. Test jumps are done before the competition to determine the speed of the jump, and that information determines the position of the launch bar on the slope, higher or lower. Being a 90 meter jump, the ideal landing area is a slope of about 36 degrees, the lower part of the hill goes down to about a 28 degree slope, which is barely on the edge of safety for the jumpers to land on. Any less than that, and you will have a re-play of the old ABC sports blurb “the agony of defeat”.

Once in this position, as I understand it, all you have to do is lift your ass off that bar, and away you go…

To the end of the jump, where they launch.

As you can see, and contrary to popular perception, the end of the jump isn’t curled up, but actually articulated down the slope, so the jumpers must launch themselves from the structure as you can see here. Willy Graves, by the way, from Brattleboro.

Yeeee haww!! The beginning of an 80 meter jump!

A picture just to show how high up these guys and gals get.

And the critical landing. This would be about a 70 meter distance jump, the longest of the day was 92 meters.

Then skis off, and back to do it again. Talk about a great day. Photographing this was a great deal more difficult than I supposed it would be, especially for the action shots, and the shots of the jumpers launching. The tree branches around he jump tended to play hell with my camera’s auto focus, and the sunlight on the snow made fore very difficult light metering. I took my Canon 18-55mm and the 55-250mm EFS lenses for this shoot. It was quite the learning experience for me, and I hope you all enjoy the pics.

I was going to go back today for more, but I decided to stay home and do some R&R. I have tomorrow off for President’s day, so I am going to be lazy, do some house chores, and perhaps make a good dinner. Be good to one another.

Lots of big life changing events are going to be coming up for me here in the near future that are going to have major implications on my further goals and life. No, I didn’t get some crunchy pregnant; just to say that the outcomes of what is currently going on with me will put me further on the path to where I want to be.

Life is very funny; sometimes what seems to be a bad thing is actually an opportunity to be taken, which is what I am dealing with now. I will write something more specific as things go down, and some outcomes are known. What I can say is that I am being thrown into a somewhat chaotic situation that I am sure is going to work out into something good, in other words, on it’s face a shit sandwich, but if you further consider it, a blessing in disguise. What doesn’t kill you doesn’t necessarily make you stronger, but it certainly makes you wiser. Just another hurdle on the course of where I want to be eventually.

I eventually want to be in Rome, NY to be with my aging father in his twilight years, and I especially want to be there with my brother; they are the only family I have left, save for my son, Tyler. The current events are moving me closer to that eventuality, and I am happy for that, difficult as they may be. When life goes to shit, just don’t assume that everything sucks, there are some diamonds to be found in that mud if you look for them. Things happen for a reason, you just need the perspective to winnow out the good from what seems to be bad and make the best of it.

Anyhow, my photo shoot at the ski jump event is still on, and I will post the pics here. I can’t wait for that. Please know that I am just fine, and actually looking forward to the changes upcoming in my situation. Next post will probably be the pics from the event, so everyone be good to one another…

Coming up this February 18th and 19th in Brattleboro will be the 90th annual Harris Hill ski jump event, and the only ISA sanctioned event in the United States. To give you an idea of what I am talking about…

And another…

The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat, or so went the old (ABC?) sports intro. I am really looking forward to this. I am trying to be put on assignment as a photographer for the local newspaper. #1, this will allow me to obtain press credentials from the event itself, #2, I might just get some images actually published, and #3, it will get me into the event for free. Wish me luck, but in any event, you guys will see some (hopefully) really good pictures of this thing, probably the 20th, since I will have some time to futz with the images in Photoshop to get them below the 8mb limit WordCrap imposes. I would have posted better pictures here, but I didn’t feel like screwing with them in Photoshop tonight.

I figure I will be using my Canon EFS lenses for this shoot; the 18-55mm for wide angle stuff, and the 55-250mm for the action shots. Those Canon image stabilizing lenses work very well, they easily afford me 3 stops lower on my shutter speeds without any blur. An easy load out, the camera with a lens attached, and the other lens in my pocket. I think I might also bring along my SLIK tripod to use as a monopod just in case.

Well, I am off to make some food, and get some rest for an eventful Friday. Be good.

Sorry, that would properly be Sunday morning coming down, by the great Kris Kristofferson, but since I have today off, and my Pats lost the superbowl, Monday will have to do. Great song, by the way, just one of many that Kris wrote, do check them out on the you tubes. So, speaking of the u-tubes, my brother sent me a video the other day of a drum line battle between the Navy and Air Force drum corps, and naturally, that got me all on looking up vids of my favorite drummers, so consider this to be a music post.

First, the inspirational video…

Well, that got me to thinking about some of my favorite drummers, and one of the first to come to mind is Vince Coliauta. He has played with many rock and jazz greats, and here he is with Jeff Beck. I know, I have posted a lot of this stuff, but it is so good…

Some really sick shit there. That brought me to another of my favorites, Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake and Palmer…Sorry, no video here, since all of them suck, just the full 20 minute cut. You really need to own this album, go out today and buy it.

To drive the point home…I actually got to see these guys years ago in Atlanta, but alas, without Carl Palmer. Cozy Powell was, however, quite an acceptable substitute.

Here is another special drummer, playing for Frank Zappa here, I give you Terry Bozzio, playing Punky’s Whips, probably about 1978 or so.

Finally, I give you Chester Thompson, another Zappa alumni, but playing for Genesis here. I actually saw them on this tour many years ago, and it remains one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Everyone have a great day, and be good to one another.

Yep, I said it, Super Bowl Sunday eve. The super bowl is easily as good as Christmas as far as I’m concerned, so good in fact that I take the Monday after off from work, so I can enjoy the day to it’s fullest. The all day pre-game is great, and the game itself is the icing on the cake. The first super bowl was played in 1966, which is also the year I was born, so when I get old and senile, I will never be able to forget how old I am. This is going to be Superbowl 46, and I turned 46 years old this year on January 12.

I can’t wait. Tomorrow is going to be a non-stop fest of watching football, and totally snacking out on some great food. Now that I live in a place that is bigger than the broom closet I moved from, I am going to put it out big for me and a few friends for the game. Here is the food I am going to make, and where it is relevant, how o make it, so consider this to be a recipe post.

For the pre-game hours, we will probably be playing cards or darts and shooting the shit, so easy is the ticket here. I am going to start with a meat and cheese platter, which is just anything you like as far as meats and cheeses are concerned, served with crackers. For cheeses, I am putting out a Habanero cheddar, a well aged gouda, some of that wonderful Grafton duette and 4yr old cheddar, as well as a port wine cheese ball. For the meats, I will serve pepperoni, hot cappicola, summer sausage, and a can or two of deviled ham. With this, a big basket of assorted crackers, and a few bowls of chips.

Since we all need to eat a well balanced diet, my next pre-game offering will be a bread bowl filled with a vegetable dip, celery and carrot sticks, scallions, and the dip will go well with the aforementioned chips. This is so easy to do. Just buy a big, round pumpernickel bread, and hollow out the middle, reserving that bread to slice into chunks to dip. Make a dip of your choice the day before, I use Knorr vegetable, and just hollow out the bread, and add the dip, then serve it on a platter with the veggies and bread cubes.

Now for the heavy stuff… Nachos are always a welcome dish for the big game, and in anticipation of that, I made a huge pot of chili last weekend. I will eventually post my recipe, but I need to work it out for you, since I don’t measure ingredients for it, nor do I always use the same ingredients. Anyhow, if you didn’t freeze 10 bags of goodness that you made for future use, just buy canned. I put some aluminum foil on a cookie sheet, then the chips, dollop liberally with the chili, then lots of shredded cheese. Top all of that with some jalapeno slices, and bake it until it is hot and the cheese is melted. I like to serve these with a bowl of salsa, and some sour cream to help beat the heat. A lot of folks like guacamole with this, but that is a stone cold pain in the ass to make, and I haven’t found an acceptable commercial product yet, so if you want to go through the trouble or just buy it, knock yourself out.

Next, is water chestnuts marinated in soy sauce, wrapped in bacon. If you are going to make these, make a lot of them, because they are good. Here is the recipe…
1 package low sodium sliced bacon
3 cans whole water chestnuts
1 10oz bottle Kikkoman soy sauce
1 tsp. sesame oil
toothpicks
In a zip-loc bag, combine the drained water chestnuts, soy sauce and sesame oil. Mix well, and press all of the air out of the bag and seal. Let that marinade in the ‘fridge overnight. When you are ready, cut the bacon slices into thirds, and wrap each water chestnut in a piece of bacon, and secure with a toothpick. I am kind of thrifty, so I save the marinade for future use. Line a cookie sheet with foil, and bake the things at 375 degrees until the bacon is crisp and done. Simple, and wildly good.

Next is cocktail weenies wrapped in biscuit dough, baked, and served with dipping sauces. Get yourself a package of cocktail weenies, and a tube of bake and serve biscuits, not the big ones, but the cheaper little package. Open the biscuits, and each one will pull apart into about 4 thin sheets of dough. Wrap the weenies in the dough, and bake them at 350 degrees until the biscuit dough is nice and brown. I will put out sweet and sour sauce, regular yellow mustard, and a brown mustard with these. Put out what you like.

Finally, kielbasa in BBQ sauce done in a crock pot. Duh!! If you can’t figure out how to make that, please leave my web site, you are not worthy.

Of course, there will be a bowl of chili and cheese to dip those leftover nacho chips and bread chunks in, as well as just a straight up bowl of chili for those with heartier appetites. Count me among those. I am going to hit the bed Sunday night about midnight fat, drunk, and happy.

My pick for the big game? Well, the line is favoring the Pats by 3, and make no mistake, Vegas is in business to make money. By that line, the wise guys are looking for either a close game, or they are just tossing a pick ‘em line with favor given to the Pats for their better regular season record. I happen to believe the latter, with a close game in the first half, and then either the Giants or the Pats running away with the game in the second. Bet your heart here in my own opinion. Betting odds on Superbowl games are usually spurious, so don’t be fooled. You have two teams which represent the best the NFL has to offer, and they are playing for all the marbles. This is going to be a great game. If the Pats win, welcome Tom Brady first into the exclusive club of NFL quarterbacks, who have won four Superbowl in their career; Terry Bradshaw of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49′ers. Second, welcome Tom into the NFL hall of fame on the first ballot. If the Giants are victorious, Eli Manning will be catapulted into the elite quarterback stratosphere in the NFL, and certainly a strong candidate for election to the hall of fame himself. Patriots win, 31-24.

I will post at halftime tomorrow, so everyone enjoy your weekend, and be good to one another.
